The Power of Radio
Radio broadcasting is a government of India monopoly under the Directorate General of All India Radio established in 1936 . since 1957 it was also known as Akashvani , a government owned semi commercial operation of the ministry of information and broadcasting .In 1947 AIR Network had only 6 stations and it expended upto 146am stations by mid 1990's. AIR provides programs in Hindi, English and sixteen regional languages. commercial radio services in India was inaugurated in 1967 is provided by Vividh Bharati Service, headquarter in Bombay .In 1924 British colonial government approved a license to a private company, the Indian broadcasting company which almost went bankrupt in 1930. In 1936 this corporation was renamed All India Radio. This is the history of Radio in India.
It was in mid 1990's several private FM stations started launching and entered the broadcasting industry in Chennai. While AIR still maintains it's Quality and service, the private stations are going crazy with the listeners.
The radio available now for the public in Chennai is meant purely for entertainment. All they do is the transmission of film songs. Even in that ,they do not mention the name of the film, the music directors name, the name of the singer or the Ragam. Today's songs are so poor in Quality both in lyrics and noise. When a human being listens to this kind of noise in radio his mind can get corrupt. These songs comes with a behavior less, wrong characters as Radio Jockeys who are not completely informed on the physcology of talking or manners in a public addressing system .May be we got to keep vigil on the Radio stations and their producers along with the program producers. It would be good if the program producers are literates and descent citizens .Even if the Indian country allows any talk ,other then abuse and insults in a public addressing system it is a commonsense to be understood that the programs should not be irritating because it is an abuse to relay nonsense to the public.
When one hears repeated transmission nonsense in the name of Jokes it is nonsense. When nonsense is repeated again and again non-stop it is not wise. It makes a listener dumb. It is the job of the government to monitor a public address and take necessary action to develop the quality of addressing. How is the quality of AIR and it still exists .Can we differentiate the quality of the government transmission with that of a private transmission .After all ,the private FM's with their money can buy the training through research and educate their staff and producers on quality. What they work now is of inferior quality. The listener should be imagined to be a smart and wise guy who can understand things. The programs should be delivered with respect, care, attention, educative and at the same time casual. The FM's are being too casual to the extent that they never know what is real and what can be done with probabilities.
Now only the film songs are being relayed .Imagine if two friends meet for past 15 years and live together for 15 years. What will happen to their life and physcological feeling, their health and mind, their place of living, if they spoke continually 24x7x15 years on film songs. It is natural that the person who monitors them for 15 years will go mad and the two friends will also be mad. It is not a natural way of doing a radio.
The life of a radio must be in a pleasant manner like the two friends must do their daily chore with cleanliness, decency must be maintained, the speech should be entertaining with jokes but without abuse, love should be there including fun, with little sentiment and seriousness, care and affection ,lightness in speech and thinking, so that they can travel for a long journey with energy and not getting bored. This is an art of a happy and long lasting technique of maintaining a relationship. Finance may also exist in the process. But dedication is a must.
These are many professionals , specialists, doctors, researchers in their respective fields who may wish to contribute their knowledge to the public. The listeners would be benefitted in terms of knowledge on a variety of subjects. India is poor as a literate country. The people can be educated on basic things important to live a life. That kind of act would be life saving and life giving. All these can be done with the present available set up. What greater help can a Radio station do than to save the life of poor people. People can be educated on government policies and facilities for the public. Monitory help of all kinds can be addressed so that the people would be benefitted. If these things are done for the next ten years , Tamil Nadu will be 100% literate. If people knew everything through Radio all major and minor problems occurring due to illiteracy can be stopped. The funds from the government is already flowing out to the public and if the people support the government ,Chennai city will be a developed city.
All the problems occurring to the public and problems made by the public can be addressed. complains from the public against the government or against public facilities can be addressed.cleanliness problems can be taken up and we can clean up the city and can keep it tidy. Improvement can be made through a suggestions program. A healthy talk is a talk that should have meaning, plan, action and execution. These kinds of programs would have talking, thinking, meaning and action. Thus ultimately the people will be benefitted. Is getting a sick feeling after 15 years of service is good or a improvement for the country with in a Span of 5 years for the sake of a healthy environment is good. Since it is the second option where we gain, we should opt to have better programs.
Since radio is a mass communication medium the power of speech, transfer of knowledge, education and messages can be spread within a short time. Mass changes of awareness can be had. The Radio can also be converted as a, voice of public- since all the public problems are addressed. Radio has to be simple with educative information's along with entertainment ultimately knowledgeable. Information's on agriculture and employment could improve life of the people. currently it is silly and useless.
The listeners must not be treated as a fool. Instead the art of teaching, talking to the listeners must be practiced and it can be mastered as an art. Since the listeners would act on hearing an information it is important to transmit the message properly. with an available time of 24 hrs the subjects or topics of speech or transmission can be split.Make major and minor divisions similar to thirukural. It's easy to understand things when it is split and understood. Research can be made on tourism industry in India. The spirituality issue in india is a powerful topic .Movies and education on engineering, medicine can be discussed with interviews. General news and business speeches are useful for the growth. Jokes can be good .Topics on money and economy are important. A study on life is also important .History of this world, India and this city are interesting topics to be heard .Geography of this planet is huge. Science of all kinds can be discussed .English and Tamil literature is a big subject available for speeches. Cooking is good to be learnt .urban and rural news can be had.
All these topics are these available for the Radio people to be transmitted. The Radio stations should operate to serve the nation and not just act as an entertainment transmission.
